EXCLUSIVE | Stan Collymore: ‘PSG will be very aware of Anfield mythology.’
Liverpool host Paris Saint-Germain tonight in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final. The hosts will need to overturn a 2-0 deficit following their defeat at the Parc des Princes. It’s a big task against the reigning champions, but for retired Liverpool player, Stan Collymore, all is not lost for his former team.
Collymore told Get French Football News the way he thinks that Liverpool can turn this tie around, “Liverpool need tempo and aggression to overturn this tie. I played for a Liverpool team against PSG in the Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final, where we were 3-0 down from the first leg. We ended up just going out in the second leg, but we won 2-0 and scored very early. I was making a nuisance of myself up front, I assisted Robbit Fowler, and we scored within the first five minutes of the game.”
He continued, “If Liverpool get a goal in the first 10 minutes at Anfield, anything is possible. PSG will be very aware of the Anfield mythology and the Barcelona result a few seasons ago – it was an impossible result, but they turned it around. If Liverpool start quickly and are at it from the first whistle, they can get back into the tie.”
He finished by explaining that Liverpool need to be wary that PSG do not think this tie is finished, “If the game settles down into a classic European second leg, then PSG have the ability and tools to be able to pick Liverpool off like they did last season. Liverpool can’t allow that and need to come out of the blocks firing.”
