Borussia Mönchengladbach head coach lauds quality January signing Hugo Bolin: “Huge compliments to the scouting department.”

When it comes to the case of deadline day acquisition Hugo Bolin, Borussia Mönchengladbach head coach Eugen Polanski is already exceedingly impressed. The 22-year-old immediately made his debut last weekend. Even though Bolin only turned in a 12-minute relief shift, Polanski hinted that the twice-capped Swedish international will soon be starting.

Striding on the pitch full of energy, Bolin earned his first round of applause from the Borussia Park crowd when he won a courageous direct duel in last weekend’s Bayer Leverkusen match. Bolin completed five sprints and was always available to rotate on the attack charges. That aspect of his game, in particular, impressed Polanski.

Polanski’s words on Hugo Bolin

He struck the right balance between the right and left sides,” Polanski raved. “Huge compliments to the scouting department and [sporting director] Rouven [Schröder]. I think we’ve gained a player who brings a great deal of freshness and quality. I’d be very satisfied if he brings more of the quality of he’s shown in training and during his minutes against Leverkusen.

Will Bolin start this weekend?

As to whether Bolin will be competing against his fellow talented young countryman Hugo Larsson and Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend, Polanski left it open. The only thing that counts for certain at this point concerns the fact that the Malmö loanee will not be playing the full 90 minutes.

We mustn’t forget that he’s in a different phase of the season,” Polanski noted. “In Scandinavia, they didn’t have a season anymore. He still played in the Europa League, then had a break.. He also said during the substitute training session in Leverkusen that this is exactly the training he needs right now.

Now we have to weigh up whether it’s better to bring him on from the bench to inject some momentum, or to let him start in the knowledge that he probably won’t last the full 90 minutes,” Polanski concluded.
