Chelsea eyeing surprise Bosman move for Harry Maguire
Chelsea will compete with Everton and West Ham United in the race to sign 32-year-old Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.
According to a report by Caught Offside, Harry Maguire is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 32-year-old Manchester United defender has emerged as a target for the West London club, and they have joined Everton and West Ham United in the battle for his signature.
How has Harry Maguire fared at Manchester United?
Harry Maguire has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Manchester United from Leicester City in a big-money move in July 2019. The 32-year-old has been one of the most polarising figures during his spell at Old Trafford, and he reached his lowest ebb when Erik ten Hag stripped him of the club captaincy a few years ago. However, the veteran English centre-back has resurrected his fortunes in the last 18 months.
The Englishman has made over 250 appearances for Manchester United thus far while chipping in with 17 goals and nine assists. However, Maguire’s long-term future at Old Trafford is uncertain, as he has entered the final six months of his contract. The situation has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs, with Chelsea, Everton, and West Ham United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.
A man in demand
Chelsea will dip into the market for a centre-back in the summer transfer window, as Axel Disasi has no future at Stamford Bridge. Additionally, Wesley Fofana has struggled with fitness issues throughout his spell with the West London club. Several candidates, including Marcos Senesi, have thus emerged on Chelsea’s wishlist, with Maguire also a viable target.
Meanwhile, Harry Maguire has been on West Ham United’s radar for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, as Max Kilman faces an uncertain future at the London Stadium. Additionally, Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos have failed to make their mark during their stints with West Ham. So, the Manchester United veteran is an option worth considering.
As for Everton, Jarrad Branthwaite has struggled with a hamstring injury this season, and David Moyes wants another centre-back in his squad. So, Maguire has emerged as a viable target for Everton, as despite his advancing age, the Englishman can be an upgrade on Michael Keane at Everton.
However, recent reports have claimed that the 32-year-old English international wants to extend his stay at Old Trafford beyond the 2025/26 season. A few updates have also suggested that Maguire and Manchester United are on the same page on his future. So, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for him.
