Will Barcelona finally end their Champions League drought in 2026?

Barcelona have had a good season so far, but whether it turns out to be a successful one will be determined over the coming months. They are well-placed to retain their La Liga title despite losing to Real Sociedad on Sunday, and the same can be said for the Copa del Rey, especially given that Real Madrid were knocked out in the previous round. However, the one those in Can Barca desperately want is the Champions League.

2026 marks 11 years since Barcelona last won European football’s biggest competition, when Luis Enrique’s side defeated Juventus 3-1 in the 2015 final. Since then, it has been close but not cigar for the Catalans, who were knocked out in the semi-finals last season by Inter, who won 7-6 on aggregate.

The Champions League is a competition that gamblers love to get involved in, and platforms like Moonbet are also able to satisfy those seeking their fix. Barcelona will be determined to get their hands on the trophy come May, but their efforts in this season’s competition have been below-par. They currently sit 15th in the league phase standings, although two wins in their final two matches in this stage (vs Slavia Prague and FC Copenhagen) should be enough to finish inside the top 8, which would ensure they avoid the play-off round for the second year in a row.

Barcelona have thrilled in the Champions League since Hansi Flick took charge in the summer of 2024, although they have not been at their best over the course of the current season, with the standout result (in a negative sense) being the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in November, which had been the last time in any competition that they had failed to win prior to Sunday’s 2-1 loss at the hands of Real Sociedad.

Defence is the key for Barcelona

Barcelona have arguably the best attack in world football, and their midfield options are also top tier. Their main issue is defence, where they have looked particularly weak this season, with Inigo Martinez’s absence having been particularly felt since he left for Al-Nassr last summer.

If Barcelona are to get their hands on the Champions League trophy come the end of the season, they need to be better defensively. They have a top goalkeeper in Joan Garcia, but he can only do so much, which is why better is needed from the likes of Jules Kounde, Pau Cubarsi and Alejandro Balde.
