Xabi Alonso confirms Kylian Mbappe injury state of play ahead of Spanish Supercup

Real Madrid may have replaced Kylian Mbappe adequately against Real Betis, but they will want him back from injury as soon as possible – especially with the Spanish Super Cup taking place later this week.

Mbappe missed the Betis match due to a knee injury, which he aggravated during the final few matches of 2025. It was initially reported that he would not be able to travel to Saudi Arabia in the coming days, but speaking in his post-match press conference (via Diario AS), Real Madrd head coach Xabi Alonso admitted that there is a chance for the Frenchman to receive the medical green light.

“He has options, he is not ruled out. We are going to wait until Tuesday to see how they feel.”

One player that is much more likely to face Atletico Madrid in Thursday’s semi-final is Aurelien Tchouameni. Despite being taken off against Betis with an apparent physical issue, Alonso has confirmed that the midfielder is fine.

“No matter what, he’s going to go to Saudi Arabia.”

Alonso: Mbappe and Gonzalo can play together

As for Mbappe, he wasn’t missed against Betis because his replacement Gonzalo Garcia netted a hattrick. This has made Alonso’s decision more difficult for when the former returns to the team, although he believes that the striker pair can play together – with Rodrygo Goes and Vinicius Junior also being included in this.

“It’s my decision. There are many games, we will have to see the moments and the needs. Nothing should be ruled out.”

Mbappe has undoubtedly been Real Madrid’s player of the season so far, but the match against Betis showed that goals can be scored without him in the team. It’s a good problem for Alonso to have for the weeks ahead, as he seeks to turn around his difficult start to life as head coach.
