Captaincy change at Feneyoord: Sem Steijn see’s armband given to Timon Wellenreuther
Robin van Persie has been forced into changing captain at Feyenoord for the rest of the season. Former FC Twente attacking midfielder Sem Steijn had been captain after only joining Feyenoord in the summer. However, as reported by ESPN, the 24-year-old has decided to focus on his recovery and own performances instead of being the leader of the club. Instead, the captaincy will now be passed on to goalkeeper Timon Wellenruether.
The 30-year-old German goalkeeper has been with Feyenoord since 2022, when he joined on loan from Anderlecht. The following summer the move was made permanent. Wellenreuther has played 107 games for Feyenoord since making the move. Previously he has had spells with Willem II, Schalke 04 and Mallorca. He is now in his fourth season with Feyenoord.
Steijn was the sides big signing last season. During the 2024/2025 season the midfielder scored an incredible 31 goals in just 48 games. Since joining Feyenoord Steijn has scored six goals and grabbed three assists in 20 games. However, he picked up a hamstring injury at the stat of December but will hopefully return after the winter break.
