Köln reflect on late dropped points against St. Pauli: “God took a nap on us.”
In a tightly contested battle between two highly physical Bundesliga sides, FC St. Pauli were able to bring their nine match losing streak to an end via a dramatic late equalizer against Köln. The result was especially bitter for the cathedral city club as they had dominated the game and found themselves deserving of all three points.
The 1-1 – scored at 90+4 by summer signing Ricky-Jade Jones in his long-awaited Bundesliga debut – left the hosts with a particularly bitter aftertaste. Köln keeper and captain Marvin Schwäbe was just seconds away from his third clean sheet of the season. At the other end, Köln’s Ragnar Ache very nearly put the game to bed with the 2-0 at 90+2.
Schwäbe lamented the fact that he let his team down whilst speaking in the mixed zone. Schwäbe couldn’t get past the fact that St. Pauli scored on one of their only chances of the game. Köln head coach Lukas Kwasniok also expressed his disappointment at the post match press conference.
“I had my long studs on because the pitch was all slushy,” Schwäbe remarked. “After a quiet match, I slipped at precisely the wrong moment. It hurts a lot as we were the better team. We could have scored more goals, but in the end it’s two points lost.“
“Like most people who came to the stadium today, I’m not feeling so great right now,” Kwasniok – who also got into an interesting tussle with St. Pauli head coach Alexander Blessin – remarked at the post-match press conference. “But on the other hand, [what happened] is what makes football so exciting.“
“I shall always remain a football fan,” Kwasniok concluded. “Even if the almighty God took a nap on us today.“
