Atletico Madrid eyeing Fernando Torres as Diego Simeone replacement

Fernando Torres is a candidate under consideration to replace Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid in the future.

According to Fichajes, Atletico Madrid are considering a change of scenery in the managerial hotseat in the future. Should the club part ways with the long-serving Diego Simeone either earlier or once his contract expires, former player and 41-year-old ex-Chelsea and Liverpool star Fernando Torres is under consideration.

Diego Simeone has achieved cult status among the Atletico Madrid fanbase, with the long-serving Argentine now a symbol for the club’s supporters. He has achieved a status that allows him to be remembered among the best spells for the club, as replacing him will be an extremely difficult task for the Spanish giants.

Simeone, during his long spell at the club spanning from 2011, has steered to end the Real Madrid-Barcelona duopoly and win the La Liga title in 2013-14 and then again in 2020-21. He has also made Atletico Madrid a strong force not only in Spain but also in Europe, helping the club to two Champions League finals during his reign, although both those ended in defeats at the hands of local rivals Real Madrid.

Given his contract ends in 2027, Atletico Madrid are thinking about a change of scenery to take the club to the new level without compromising on what Simeone has built over the years. The club are eager to retain the philosophy the Argentine manager has built, although they are concerned about the consequences of having a man for this long at the club.

Hence, they are willing to consider the prospect of a change of manager in the near future and have drawn up a small shortlist. Former player and current Flamengo boss Filipe Luis is a target in that regard, while another ex-player, Fernando Torres, is the latest name under consideration.

Is Fernando Torres the right choice for Atletico Madrid?

Fernando Torres ended his playing career and soon after was part of the Atletico Madrid youth setup. He has since grown in strength in the coaching aspect, and is currently managing the Atletico-B side, as he has already shown with his style that managing the senior side could be a potential option.

The 41-year-old ex-Chelsea and Liverpool star is also someone revered by the fans during his playing days, as the club hierarchy could see him as a good fit to succeed Simeone. For now, Atletico Madrid are not showing any sense of urgency to replace the Argentine, but when they do, Torres could have a strong chance to replace the long-serving boss.
