Predicted Liverpool lineup against Sunderland: Salah in for Gakpo; Robertson at left-back

Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson will return to the Liverpool starting lineup when they host Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday.

Liverpool will be eager to return to build on the win over West Ham United this past weekend when they welcome Sunderland to Anfield on Wednesday night. Arne Slot has no new injury concerns to worry about ahead of his side’s latest fixture.

Giovanni Leoni remains a long-term absentee due to a knee injury that has ended the young defender’s career. The Italian prodigy accompanies Conor Bradley (muscular) and Jeremie Frimpong (hamstring) in the treatment room.

Meanwhile, during his pre-match press conference, Slot did not provide a fitness update on any player. However, the Dutch tactician discussed how his charges have recovered from the short break between games, and he spoke about Joe Gomez’s recent performance.

The Liverpool manager said, “I haven’t thought so much about that because yesterday we had recovery and after this press conference we’re going to train, so let’s see how players feel. Florian, for example, has missed out one-and-a-half or two weeks of training.”

“So, for him to already play so many minutes was a good thing and we played again Joe Gomez, so let’s see. It was encouraging to see Florian playing that well, but it’s not the first time he played well for us. Maybe it was the first time other people noticed, but I’ve seen him playing well for us many times already.”

“For Alex [Isak] to score his first goal was also very positive. Also, a player who couldn’t play I think five to 10 more minutes than he played, because he told me yesterday he felt a little bit of cramp coming up already. So, another player where we should see how he does when he trains today.”

Slot also discussed the possibility of a start for Florian Wirtz, Joe Gomez, and Alexander Isak. The Liverpool boss said, “I think they’re not able to play three times 90 [minutes] – that’s for sure. I have to wait and see how they feel today [to see] if they are able tomorrow [to play] from the start again. All three of them can be involved in all three games if they don’t get an injury, that’s a fair assumption to make.”

Alisson Becker is an automatic pick between the sticks, with Liverpool lining up in a 4-3-3 formation in front of him against Sunderland on Wednesday. The backline will feature Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, and Andrew Robertson, with the latter replacing Milos Kerkez at left-back.

As for the midfield unit, there is no looking past Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai. Florian Wirtz will line up on the left flank again, with Alexander Isak leading the line for the home side against Sunderland. Finally, Mohamed Salah will complete the numbers from the right wing. So, Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike will be backup options on the bench.

Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson; Gomez, Konate, van Dijk, Robertson; Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Isak, Wirtz
