Despite apology, Mainz’s notorious ‘hard man’ Dominik Kohr threatened with lengthy disciplinary ban

Mainz defender Dominik Kohr’s latest sending off threatens the 31-year-old with serious consequences. According to Kicker, the German FA is considering imposing a match ban of up to four fixtures for the notorious Bundesliga record holder of the most sending offs in league history. Kohr’s 2025 calendar year may be over if the maximum sentence is imposed.

Although Kohr has taken to social media to apologize for his dangerous challenge on Hoffenheim attacker Max Moerstedt, it may prove a case of “too little, too late” for the DFB disciplinary arm. The German court responsible for handing down suspensions is fed up with dealing with cases involving Kohr. A final ruling is expected today.

Kohr’s apology, along with the insistence of his teammates that he is not the “Bundesliga Bully” many German footballers make him out to be isn’t expected to sway the DFB decision. The Trier-native’s repeated reckless challenges must be addressed in some fashion. Words from Kohr himself and teammates such as Danny da Costa cannot ameliorate the situation.

“You keep reading articles in which he is described as the ‘bully of the league’,” Da Costa told Sky Germany on Friday night. “I’ve known and played with him long enough to say that this is not fair to him. He has an aggressive playing style, but there are many other players who occasionally go too far. The tackle on Moerstedt was not intentional.“‘

It’s important to me to address you directly today, and especially you, Max Moerstedt,” Kohr himself wrote Saturday on his Instagram feed. “In my mind, I just wanted to prevent a pass. When I saw the TV images. I was shocked myself. It could have turned out differently. I’m relieved and glad that nothing more happened to you and that you were able to continue playing.

I also apologize to the Mainz fans whom I serve and for whom I always want to give my all,” Kohr continued. “I want to throw myself into every tackle for you, but I want to reassure you once again that I never want to hurt anyone on purpose.“
