Manchester United expected to sign Joao Gomes in January
Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United are expected to get a deal over the line for Wolves midfield star Joao Gomes in January.
According to Trivela, Joao Gomes could end up joining Manchester United in the upcoming transfer window in a deal worth around €50 million, as talks between both clubs have progressed in the last week.
Gomes, who came up the ranks at Flamengo, hasn’t looked back since joining Wolves at the start of 2023. Not only has he established himself as one of their mainstays, but he is also widely regarded as one of the best young midfielders in the Premier League.
Wolves have been struggling in the ongoing campaign, as they are bottom of the points table with just two points in their 12 outings. They are set for an intense relegation battle. With the club struggling, Gomes’ future has become a massive talking point.
While relegation would almost guarantee his departure, the 24-year-old could actually end up leaving the club in the upcoming transfer window, as Manchester United have stepped up their efforts to secure his services.
The Red Devils forked out a fortune to bolster their attack in the summer, but now they are looking to add more quality to their midfield amidst uncertainty around Casemiro’s long-term future. They consider Gomes an ideal long-term replacement for his compatriot.
United are plotting a raid on Wolves for Gomes
With Kobbie Mainoo’s future also uncertain, signing the Wolves midfielder is a top priority for them. He has all the qualities to succeed in Ruben Amorim’s team, and they are already in advanced talks with Wolves over a potential deal that could cost around €50 million.
While United have made significant progress in renewal talks, there is still a long way to go for the transfer to go through. Rod Edwards, who recently took charge of the club, will certainly try his best to keep hold of Gomes. He reportedly asked the club not to sell their top players mid-season before taking charge as their manager.
Relegation to the Championship could have a significant impact on the valuation of the player. Wolves might be forced to sell him for a much lower figure; as a result, they certainly have a lot to think about in the coming months.
