Tottenham unlikely to sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen in January, Chelsea deal possible

Tottenham are not likely to chase Marc-Andre ter Stegen in January, although Chelsea’s interest could accelerate if a loan deal becomes possible.

According to TEAMtalk, Marc-Andre ter Stegen is expected to leave Barcelona in January amid links to Premier League sides. Tottenham are not likely to make a push for the German international despite holding an interest, although Chelsea might explore a move if a loan deal is a possibility.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s future at Barcelona is up in the air ahead of the winter transfer window, as the German international could find it difficult to break back into the team. The arrival of Joan Garcia adds to the complication with the long-serving Barcelona star, as well as the presence of Wojciech Szczesny.

The two fit shot-stoppers are seen as the first choices under Hansi Flick as things stand, which could pave the way for ter Stegen to leave Barcelona in January. There is also the pressure on the keeper to play regularly once he returns from his injury, as a place in the Germany World Cup squad could be at stake.

There were reports of links to many clubs, with some stories pointing to the possibility of Marc-Andre ter Stegen being offered to Premier League sides. Whether there is any credibility in those links remains to be seen, as those clubs include Chelsea and Tottenham.

The German shot-stopper, who joined Barcelona back in 2014 in a €12 million deal from Borussia Monchengladbach, is one of the highest earners at the club. That could be a big reason for Tottenham to back away from any potential deal, as well as the fact that they do not want to sign a keeper at the wrong end of his career, although Spurs did hold an interest ahead of January.

Chelsea could explore a move for ter Stegen

With Tottenham unlikely to push for ter Stegen’s signature, Chelsea could be in the mix if they can find an agreement to take the €12 million Barcelona star on loan. The keeper situation at Stamford Bridge is still on the edge despite the improved performances from Robert Sanchez. However, should the veteran be made available on loan in the winter window, the Blues could explore a potential move.

They have no plans to make a ploy to sign the €12 million Barcelona star permanently, as they have Mike Maignan on their list ahead of a possible Bosman move next summer. Hence, there’s every possibility that Chelsea plot a loan approach, as the Blaugrana could look to curb their massive wage bill even if they have to send away Marc-Andre ter Stegen temporarily in January.
