Milan Player Ratings vs Atalanta: Ricci First Enough for a Point
Milan spurned an early lead to share the spoils with Atalanta in a dramatic 1-1 Serie A draw at the Gewiss Stadium. Massimiliano Allegri’s side failed to bounce back from a gut-wrenching 2-2 home stalemate against rock-bottom Pisa last weekend.
It was a dream start to the game for Milan as Samuele Ricci scored his first league goal in the Rossoneri shirt to open the scoring after just four minutes. However, Allegri’s decision to pull his troops back in a futile attempt to protect a slender lead returned to haunt the visiting side.
Indeed, it was only a matter of time before Atalanta would find a well-deserved equalizer. After wasting several half-chances, Ivan Juric’s men leveled the score through Ademola Lookman, who scored his first goal of the season with a superb finish from inside the box.
Both sides had their chances in the second half, but the scoreline remained unchanged. Youssouf Fofana missed Milan’s best scoring opportunity after the break before Mike Maignan saved the 19-time Italian champions with a fabulous save to thwart Davide Zappacosta.
Without further ado, let’s look at our Milan ratings.
Milan (3-5-2)
Mike Maignan – 8/10
There was absolutely nothing he could do to stop Lookman from scoring. However, he came up huge late in the game to rescue a point for Milan.
Strahinja Pavlovic – 7/10
The Serbian defender delivered yet another reassuring performance, faring outstandingly against Charles De Ketelaere while venturing forward at any given opportunity.
Matteo Gabbia – 6/10
Too passive and slow to close down Lookman, the Italian center-back struggled against the lightning-quick Nigerian forward. However, he was unbeatable in the air.
Fikayo Tomori – 6/10
His poor reaction nearly cost Milan dearly, but the former Chelsea star had Maignan to bail him out. Not one of his best showings this season!
Davide Bartesaghi – 6/10
Following a fairly quiet first half, the young wingback sprang into life in the second half, making several teasing crosses from the left flank.
Samuele Ricci – 8/10
In addition to scoring a spectacular, albeit fortuitous goal, the ex-Torino midfielder was impressive tonight, covering a lot of ground while keeping his passes clean and precise.
Luka Modric – 6/10
It felt like the veteran superstar ran out of steam. He lacked his usual sharpness and struggled to dictate the tempo. Frustration culminated in a cynical yellow card.
Youssouf Fofana – 5/10
Despite his tireless runs and energetic approach, the Frenchman’s decision-making was terrible. He should’ve done better in that goal-promising situation.
Alexis Saelemaekers – 7/10
Unlike his counterpart on the left-hand side, the versatile forward was lively from the get-go. He constantly looked to stretch the opposition’s defense, completing several dangerous runs down the flank.
Rafael Leao – 4/10
Milan needed their talismanic winger to be the difference-maker, yet Leao let his side down in Bergamo. It was like he was disconnected from the game from the start.
Santiago Gimenez – 3/10
As if Allegri needed another reason to finally bench him, Gimenez delivered another anonymous performance. He offered little to no movement up front, failed to hold up play, and never threatened the goal before being taken off.
