Thomas Meunier reveals how Manchester United move collapsed
LOSC Lille defensive mainstay Thomas Meunier has opened up about his failed move to Manchester United during his time at Borussia Dortmund.
Thomas Meunier revealed that he had the opportunity to join his dream club, Manchester United, but the transfer fell through after he was left unimpressed by a request made by the Premier League side’s manager.
The Belgian, who left Borussia Dortmund to join Trabzonspor in 2024, certainly had the chance to move to England, but things ultimately didn’t work out for him.
While speaking about his failed United move on RTBF, the 34-year-old said : “A little anecdote. When I was at Dortmund. I could have signed for Manchester United. I didn’t have an agent. And, in fact, the coach there at the time clearly directed me to his agent so I could sign for Manchester United. I refused, and I didn’t sign. Otherwise, you would have known… But there you go,”
After a decent four-year spell at French club Paris Saint-Germain, Meunier left them to join Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2020 on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract. During his time at the German club, he could only make 83 appearances as he kept struggling with injuries.
Meunier turned down Manchester United move
While his time at the Bundesliga outfit didn’t go according to plan for him, the 34-year-old did have the golden opportunity to join his dream club, Manchester United. The Red Devils were looking to add more depth at right back, and they did knock on his door.
The Belgian international had a long-standing desire to move to Old Trafford, but he ultimately turned it down because the then-United manager made a weird request. Meunier was without an agent during that time, and it was the main reason why the move didn’t go through.
United’s manager wanted him to sign with his agent in order to complete his move to the Premier League giants. The 34-year-old full-back wasn’t pleased with the request, and he let go of the opportunity. Meunier went on to stay at Dortmund for four years before joining Trabzonspor at the start of 2024.
The move to the Turkish side didn’t work out, and he ended up moving to LOSC Lille in the following summer. While he is in the final phase of his career, the 34-year-old is certainly enjoying his time at the French club.
