Napoli Not Getting Much Return on their Big Investments
Kevin De Bruyne and Rasmus Hojlund have carried Napoli in multiple matches, but the same can’t be said about their other newcomers, who have struggled to find their footing following the summer transfer despite their large price tags, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs (via Goal).
Sam Beukema, who has been chased after for months and acquired for €35M, has gotten a lot of opportunities due to the injuries to their two starters, Amir Rrahmani and Alessandro Buongiorno. However, he hasn’t been as dominant as he was at Bologna. Lorenzo Lucca, who came in for €40M, has progressively faltered after the arrival of the Dane. He has scored just once so far.
Napoli coach Antonio Conte has yet to unleash Noa Lang, who was supposed to bring some pizzazz following a €25M move. Instead, the boss has preferred adapting Scott McTominay to the wing in most matches. Even Elijf Elmas, who’s familiar with the team, hasn’t lived up to expectations. He was a key deputy and super-sub under Luciano Spalletti.
Miguel Gutierrez was the last one to join and had to recover from an ankle surgery. He hasn’t really challenged Leonardo Spinazzola has been going like gangbusters this season.
Our Take on Napoli
They have pretty much the same backbone, but an adjustment period is normal after so many additions. It’s a bit odd that even those coming from other Serie A sides haven’t been greats, but a slow start is routine when you are leveling up and facing more pressure. Lucca has been the biggest disappointment so far. His early woes forced them to throw even more money at the position once Romelu Lukaku went down, at the expense of other roles.
