Real Madrid suffer injury blow in midfield nine days from El Clasico with Barcelona

Real Madrid are without one of their midfielders just nine days away from El Clasico, with doubts over whether he will make the headline clash at the Santiago Bernabeu. While Dani Ceballos has not been a starter under Xabi Alonso, the loss of his skillset would be a blow to Los Blancos.

As reported by Marca, Ceballos has not trained since the 8th of October, nearly ten days ago. Ceballos was one of the players not involved in international duty, but did take part in a practice game between Real Madrid’s senior side and the Castilla team. The 28-year-old has not trained since, after suffering a muscle problem, and spent Friday in the gym while his teammates trained outside.

It has been reported by Jose Luis Sanchez that the problem relates to his left hamstring. Ceballos will be out of their Sunday clash against Getafe at the Coliseum, and is also a doubt for their game against Juventus on Tuesday at the Santiago Bernabeu. However he would still be in the mix to return against Barcelona the following Saturday.

Kylian Mbappe back to fitness

The positive news for Los Blancos is that Kylian Mbappe was back in training, and completed the session without issues. Mbappe has been rested by Real Madrid after suffering an ankle strain while on France duty, but is expected to be back in action against Getafe.

Uncertainty over Real Madrid midfield construction

The injury comes at a time when Xabi Alonso is not entirely certain of his configuration in midfield. The injury issues at right-back could return Fede Valverde to that position, leaving a spot open in Real Madrid’s midfield. Arda Guler, Jude Bellingham, Franco Mastantuono and Aurelien Tchouameni would perhaps be the most obvious choice without Valverde or Ceballos in contention, although Eduardo Camavinga could also come back into the fold.
