Kalvin Phillips expected to leave Manchester City in January

Manchester City will likely part ways with 29-year-old English international Kalvin Phillips in the winter transfer window, thus ending a frustrating stint for him.

According to a report by Football Insider, Kalvin Phillips has no future at Manchester City. The English international has struggled to make his mark in the last three seasons, and his loan spells have not worked out either. So, the Citizens are keen on cutting their losses, and they will “almost certainly” part ways with the former Leeds United midfielder in the winter transfer window.

Kalvin Phillips and his Manchester misery

Kalvin Phillips has seen his stock plummet since joining Manchester City from Leeds United in a deal worth £42 million, plus £3 million in add-ons, in July 2022. The Englishman was among the Premier League’s best midfielders when he moved to the Etihad, with his and Raphinha’s departure causing Leeds to collapse and crash out of the Premier League in the 2022/23 season.

However, the 29-year-old has struggled to make his mark at Manchester City, not even showing flashes of brilliance. Pep Guardiola has barely used the former Leeds United midfielder whenever he has been at the Etihad, and he reached the lowest ebb of his career when the Manchester City manager branded him “overweight” a few years ago. Meanwhile, loan moves with West Ham United and Ipswich Town have not worked out either.

Phillips is back at Manchester City after an underwhelming loan spell with Ipswich Town, and he has managed only seven minutes of game time thus far in the 2025/26 season. So, it is hardly surprising that the English midfielder has no future at the Etihad, with Manchester City “almost certain” to cash in on him in the winter transfer window.

What next?

Manchester City’s stance on Kalvin Phillips’s future is understandable, considering the former Leeds United midfielder has failed to stamp his authority since arriving from the West Yorkshire outfit. So, it is time for both parties to cut their losses, as Manchester City can still recoup something from his sale.

As for Phillips, the 29-year-old Englishman may have enough time to make his mark on Thomas Tuchel and earn a spot in England’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, it is unclear which clubs will pursue his signature in the winter transfer window.

Reports in the summer transfer window linked Phillips with Leeds United. However, it is unclear if the West Yorkshire outfit will return for his signature in the winter transfer window after signing Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach this past summer.
