Chelsea working on signing a centre-back in January
Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are all set to push for a new central defender on a priority basis during the winter transfer window.
Chelsea have not had the best of starts to the new season, and it has put a lot of pressure on Enzo Maresca. If he fails to turn things around, the Italian manager’s position could also come under threat despite the success he delivered last season.
One of the biggest reasons for their struggles could be the fact that they lack depth and quality at the back. Injuries to key defenders have left Maresca short in central defence. As a result, the Blues are all set to prioritise the signing of a new centre-back when the transfer window reopens, as per a report from Football Insider.
Chelsea’s injury struggles
Levi Colwill suffered an ACL injury at the start of the season. It was a massive blow for Maresca, as the 22-year-old was one of his go-to options at the back. Following his injury, the Italian wanted to bring in a central defender at the very end of the window.
The London club did make efforts to sign a centre-back on deadline day. However, things didn’t go according to plan, and it left Maresca frustrated. Apart from Colwill, Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo have now picked up knocks, further complicating things for the manager.
He has been forked to use Jorrel Hato, the teenage full-back in the heart of the defence. While he did try his best, they still ended up suffering a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton. Trevoh Chalobah was sent off in that fixture, which further complicates matters for him.
A new centre-back is a top priority
The decision to ask Axel Disasi to train away from the squad, as he is not in his plans, has also backfired. He could have been a great backup option in such a difficult situation. Maresca was keen on adding a defender on deadline day, and he will certainly push for one when the window reopens.
The club have now decided to act on their manager’s demands and get it done. They will prioritise the signing of a top-level centre-back. They already have a list of options prepared, and it will be interesting to see who they go after.
