AC Milan want to sign Joe Gomez in January

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been linked with a move away from the club, and AC Milan are hoping to sign him in January.

According to a report by Calciomercato, AC Milan are looking to add more quality and depth to their defensive unit, and they have identified Joe Gomez as a target. He has struggled for regular game time at Liverpool, playing just 29 minutes of Premier League football this season. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool are willing to sanction his departure.

The Reds are already lacking depth in the defensive unit, and they have now lost Giovanni Leoni to an ACL injury. The Italian defensive prospect is unlikely to play again this season. So, Liverpool are now reduced to just three first-team defenders. It is highly unlikely that Liverpool will sanction his departure, even though he has not been playing regularly.

It is fair to assume that the English utility man will want more action in the coming weeks, and it remains to be seen whether he can convince the manager to give him more starts. While recent reports have suggested that Gomez may leave Liverpool in January, a sale makes no sense.

AC Milan could use Joe Gomez

Meanwhile, AC Milan could use more quality at the back as well. The 28-year-old Liverpool defender would be an excellent addition for them. The Englishman has proven himself in the Premier League over the years, and there is no doubt that he has the quality to succeed in Italy as well.

Joe Gomez is versatile enough to operate as a central defender as well as a full-back. His versatility will be an added bonus for any team that manages to sign him. Interestingly, the experienced defender was a target for AC Milan in the summer transfer window before the deal failed to materialise.

The 28-year-old is at the peak of his career, and sitting on the bench at Liverpool will not be appealing for him. It remains to be seen whether he can sort out his future quickly. Liverpool will probably look to sign a quality central defender during the winter transfer window. Even then, it is highly unlikely that they will sanction his departure midway through the season. Any move might have to wait until the summer transfer window.
