Manchester United slammed for not signing Alexander Isak
Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has slammed the club for not signing Liverpool star Alexander Isak.
Despite their financial struggles, Manchester United forked out a significant fee to bolster their attack in the recently concluded transfer window. While they did add a lot of firepower, the summer signings haven’t helped them get the desired result.
Ruben Amorim was looking to bring in a world-class striker in the summer, and the Red Devils struck a deal with RB Leipzig for Slovenian international Benjamin Sesko. However, United legend Teddy Sheringham isn’t pleased with their decision. He has criticised the club for not signing Alexander Isak, who is a proven Premier League star.
Sheringham on United missing out on Isak
While speaking to , the 1999 treble winner said: “I go back again to when Harry Kane and Declan Rice were both available and Manchester United were nowhere near either of them.
“Instead, United have put their money in players who are not used to English football. They have spent a lot of money, but they’ve not got the right players in.
“They could have had Kane for £100 million and they ended up buying Rasmus Hojlund for £70m.
“They could have got Alexander Isak this summer for £120m and they got Benjamin Sesko instead.
“Sir Alex Ferguson would have always gone out and broken the bank to get that leader, to get that top player, so that everybody looks at him as soon as he pulls that shirt on and goes, wow, what a player. I want to play like him. I want to be like him.
“When you get players that are not quite sure about their own ability or coming into the Premier League for the first time, they are looking around for a bit of help, but it doesn’t work like that. When you’re a £70m player, you should be showing us the way.
“So it’s not rocket science for me. The reason why Manchester United are where they are now is because of the stature of the players they have been buying are not good enough.”
United’s transfer strategy hasn’t been on point
Sheringham feels one of the reasons why United are struggling in modern times is that they haven’t been smart with the choices they have made in the transfer market. They often invested a lot of funds in players who are not in their prime and haven’t proved themselves in the English top flight.
While Sesko is undoubtedly a massive talent, the former Leipzig striker has yet to experience the demands of the English top flight and is clearly struggling to adapt. He remains without a goal or an assist in his first six appearances across competitions.
Sheringham believes the Red Devils should have opted for Alexander Isak, who ended up joining rivals Liverpool from Newcastle on transfer deadline day in a British record deal worth £125 million. The Swedish striker has proven himself in the Premier League at the Tyneside club. He is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the world, and his arrival would have been a massive boost for the United squad as a whole.
The former United striker believes Isak would have been a much wiser choice than Sesko. United have made similar mistakes in the past, having missed out on the likes of Declan Rice and Harry Kane. If they had taken the right calls back in the day, they would have been in a much better position at this stage.
