Chelsea interested in Mikel Jauregizar

Chelsea are reportedly interested in Athletic Club midfielder Mikel Jauregizar as their next addition to the midfield, which could see some others depart.

According to Fichajes, Chelsea are reportedly interested in a deal for Athletic Club star Mikel Jauregizar ahead of 2026. The Blues are looking to execute another strategy to improve their midfield ranks, as the possible arrival of the Basque star will likely see a few existing stars depart.

Chelsea’s current owners have adopted a strategy to invest and then look to make a profit by selling those players. Like they did this summer, the Blues sold some of their exciting stars for a profit and replaced them with younger stars with a big upside for the future.

For instance, the likes of Noni Madueke departed for Arsenal and then used the funds to bring in someone like Jamie Gittens as a replacement of sorts. They are eager to adopt a similar strategy to refresh their midfield ranks, although there are no plans to sell either Enzo Fernandez or Moises Caicedo.

Others, like the injury-prone Romeo Lavia, could depart if he cannot improve his situation or Andrey Santos, who did attract big interest during the summer. Chelsea have a few names on their shortlist that would suit the profile of a player they are looking at, which includes Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton.

Chelsea are also keen on Eduardo Camavinga, although both Wharton and the Frenchman may force the club to make a higher financial commitment. Hence, they are looking at other profiles such as 21-year-old La Liga midfield prospect Mikel Jauregizar.

Jauregizar has excelled during his short spell so far with Athletic Club, as his technical ability and passing range have put him on the shortlist of many top clubs. Manchester United are interested, while Liverpool are also among those looking at him closely. Chelsea are ready to explore a move for the 21-year-old La Liga midfield prospect, as they view him as a replacement for Lavia and a rotational option.

Having Jauregizar could allow Chelsea to compete at the highest levels across all competitions without losing too much quality in their midfield. However, signing him will prove challenging as Athletic Club have a stronger position when it comes to negotiating, given the midfielder has a contract until 2031.
