Barcelona are on their way to a victory in their first Champions League match of the season, having doubled their lead against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

It has not been an easy evening for the Catalans, who have struggled without the injured Lamine Yamal. Newcastle will feel that they should have scored twice in the first half, and they were made to pay just before the hour mark when Marcus Rashford headed home his first Barcelona goal.

And on his return to England, he has now doubled up – and it is a special strike from the edge of the box that left Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope with no chance whatsoever of making a save.

Marcus Rashford makes his mark for Barcelona

It has been an encouraging start to life at Barcelona for Rashford, although he had little to show for him during the first few weeks of the La Liga season. But he certainly has his reward now, with what could be a match-winning performance in the Champions League.
