Barcelona set deadline for Gavi surgery decision

Barcelona are set to make a decision on Gavi’s knee injury in the coming days. The 20-year-old midfielder has spent the last month out with what appeared to be simple discomfort, but has now been diagnosed as a meniscus issue.

While club sources have assured that the cruciate ligaments which he damaged nearly two years ago are not impacted, it is an injury in the same area, and Barcelona are keen to proceed with caution. Last week it was revealed that Gavi was facing a choice between a conservative treatment, essentially coming down to rest and recovery, or an arthroscopy. The latter would rule Gavi out for five weeks if they do decide to proceed with it.

Barcelona decision on surgery imminent

It was decided last week that the player would give himself another week to decide whether the knee was progressing favourably, and he would continue the conservative treatment. RAC1 are reporting that the final decision on surgery has been delayed until next week. If Gavi does have the operation, he would likely be ruled out for El Clasico, and possibly until after the November international break.

Gavi’s recovery from the cruciate ligament injury

It is not uncommon for players to experience injuries after recovering from a major trauma, as they adapt to any changes in their physique during that time. Gavi had remained relatively fit since returning, but in the final month of last season was beginning to look much more like himself.

Gavi is set to compete for a deeper role in midfield this season with Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal and Marc Casado. Bernal just came back from a cruciate ligament injury of his own on Sunday, providing an assist in Barcelona’s 6-0 win over Valencia.
