SL Benfica considering Ruben Amorim swoop
Portuguese giants SL Benfica are considering appointing Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim as their new manager.
Despite making significant changes to his Manchester United squad, Ruben Amorim has failed to get the desired results. With the team struggling, the pressure continues to mount on the Portuguese manager, and he could soon be shown the exit door.
Amorim already seems to have a team that are ready to offer him a job if Manchester United decide to sack him. According to a report from Fichajes, Benfica are interested in appointing the former Sporting CP boss as their new manager.
The 40-year-old made quite a name for himself at Sporting CP. He helped them re-establish themselves as one of the giants in Portuguese football. His sensational work had put him on the wishlist of multiple top clubs.
Eventually, Manchester United forked out a significant fee towards the end of 2024 to appoint him as their new manager following the sacking of Erik ten Hag. Amorim warned Manchester United fans about a potential storm during the second half of last season, and it certainly was a difficult period for the club as they could only manage a 15th-place finish.
Despite the struggles, the club went ahead and backed him during the summer transfer window. While Manchester United did add a lot of quality to their squad, the transfers have not really worked out as they still struggle to get the desired results.
Manchester United have only won one out of their five games this season, and their defeat to Manchester City on Sunday night has resulted in a lot of speculation about the manager, who continues to insist that he won’t change his style despite their struggles.
Benfica are ready to sign Amorim
If Ruben Amorim fails to turn things around quickly, the Red Devils might as well be forced to part ways with him. Benfica could make the most out of the situation. Amorim played for the Portuguese club for the majority of his career, and he has a strong bond with the club.
The Portuguese tactician is expected to sit on their bench eventually, but it could happen sooner rather than later. The Primeira Liga giants understand that they need to have a generational change in their dugout, and Amorim could be the best man to take them forward.
Amorim has a sensational record in the Portuguese top flight with Sporting, and given his relationship with the club, the fans would love to see him return. It will be a powerful statement from Benfica if they do end up appointing him. If his time in England is cut short, the Lisbon club won’t hesitate to offer him a job.
