Predicted Manchester United lineup against Manchester City: Mainoo to start; Cunha, Mount ruled out

Altay Bayindir will retain his spot between the sticks for Manchester United when they take on Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday.

Manchester United will aim to build on the narrow win over Burnley in Gameweek 3 when they lock horns with Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday evening. Ruben Amorim has new injury concerns to worry about ahead of his side’s latest fixture.

Diogo Dalot is the latest absentee after picking up a muscular injury during international duty with Portugal. The 26-year-old has joined Lisandro Martinez (knee), Mason Mount (knock), and Matheus Cunha (hamstring) on the sidelines.

Mount and Cunha have not been able to shrug off the minor injuries they picked up against Burnley, and they will likely return next week. Meanwhile, during his pre-match press conference, Amorim provided fitness updates on Dalot, Mount, and Cunha.

The Manchester United manager said, “I think they are out for this game. I don’t know how long it is going to take. We need those players to be a very, very competitive team, but we have very good players that are eager to play, so we will be competitive on Sunday, but they are out, they cannot help us in this game.”

“I don’t want to say [how long they will be out]. If you talk with Cunha, if you catch Cunha outside, he will say he can play this game! So I don’t know. We will manage day by day, but they are pushing hard and that is a good thing.”

Meanwhile, Amorim confirmed who will start between the sticks on Sunday after Manchester United signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day of the summer transfer window, with Altay Bayindir retaining his spot between the sticks.

Amorim said, “We are really pleased: he [Senne] is a goalkeeper with a lot of potential. I know that we are in the moment that the goalkeeper needs to be really strong and have a lot of experience but we are also in the moment that we have to look at the present, but with a focus on the future. So it’s a little bit of both. A guy with great potential that is one more option, one more option to play, and he’ll be ready.”

“It’s the same thing that I do with different positions [in deciding the line-up]. Of course, it’s not the same, but Altay is going to continue because it’s a different league, it’s a different country, trainings, ball, so we try to maintain that and they will fight for the position. So, for me, it’s clear, Altay will start. We believe in our goalkeepers, I believe in Altay, he’s ready to play and he’s going to play.”

As Amorim confirmed, Altay Bayindir will retain his spot between the sticks, with Manchester United lining up in a 3-4-2-1 formation in front of him against Manchester City. The central defensive unit will feature Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Luke Shaw. Meanwhile, Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu will be the two wing-backs, with both players returning to the starting lineup.

As for the midfield unit, Kobbie Mainoo should pair up with Casemiro in the middle of the park, with Bruno Fernandes playing a more advanced role alongside Bryan Mbeumo. Finally, Benjamin Sesko will lead the line against Manchester City, making his first Premier League start for the Red Devils.

Predicted Manchester United XI: Bayindir; Yoro, de Ligt, Shaw; Mazraoui, Mainoo, Casemiro, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes; Sesko
