Monchi working on Aston Villa move for Ruben Vargas
Aston Villa chief Monchi is reportedly working hard to bring Sevilla attacking mainstay Ruben Vargas to the Premier League.
According to a report from Fichajes, Monchi is plotting a raid on his former club to sign Swiss attacker Ruben Vargas. The Aston Villa sporting director has been in red-hot form since joining La Liga outfit Sevilla, and he is pushing to add him to Unai Emery’s squad at the West Midlands club.
After making a name for himself at FC Augsburg, Vargas made the move to the Spanish club at the start of 2025. He had an impressive start to life at Sevilla, but a hamstring injury ruled him out of the final phase of the season.
However, the 27-year-old is back fit, and he has been doing wonders for them in the new campaign. Vargas has already bagged three goals in as many outings. The Swiss international is a fan favourite. His work rate and versatility across the attack have made him an integral part of the team.
His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, with multiple top clubs now eager to sign the former Augsburg attacker. While there is no shortage of interest in Ruben Vargas, Aston Villa appear to be the most determined to secure his signature.
Monchi wants to bring Vargas to Villa
Unai Emery wants more quality in his squad’s offensive unit. He loves working with versatile players and would absolutely love to have someone like Ruben Vargas at his disposal. Aston Villa chief Monchi is also a massive admirer of the 27-year-old, and he has already started working on a potential transfer.
Monchi is ready to raid his former club for the signature of the Swiss international. The 56-year-old sees him as an ideal fit for their project at Aston Villa, and given the kind of form he is in, Vargas could do wonders for them in the Premier League.
However, acquiring his services in the winter transfer window won’t be that straightforward. The player’s contract at Sevilla runs until the summer of 2029, and the Spanish club are reluctant to let go of one of their most important players mid-season.
But an important financial offer can certainly force them into considering parting ways with him. It will be interesting to see if Aston Villa formalise their interest with an offer when the window reopens in January.
