Aston Villa could sell Morgan Rogers if this happens

Chelsea and Tottenham have received a massive boost in their pursuit of Aston Villa attacking mainstay Morgan Rogers.

According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Aston Villa could be forced to part ways with Morgan Rogers next summer due to financial concerns. While the Villans have managed to keep hold of him for now, they might have no choice but to accept offers for the English international next year.

This is a massive boost for Tottenham and Chelsea, who are both keen on signing the 23-year-old. The North London club held initial talks about signing him this summer, while the Blues have a strong interest and have been monitoring him for a while.

Rogers joined Aston Villa at the start of 2024 from Middlesbrough, and he has only gone from strength to strength since. The 23-year-old has established himself as one of their mainstays, and his impressive performances have helped him break into the English national team.

The former Manchester City youth star still has five years left on his deal, but he could have been on the move this summer as the club struggled to balance their books. The Birmingham-based club had serious concerns about profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

To avoid selling some of their biggest stars, they ended up selling their women’s team this summer to comply with financial regulations. While they have sorted things out for now, Aston Villa could find themselves in a similar situation next summer, as per the report.

If that happens, they might be forced to accept offers for Rogers, who is the most valuable asset in Unai Emery’s team. Given the amount of interest in his services, he could help them raise a significant fee that could help them avoid any sanctions.

Pete O’Rourke on Morgan Rogers

While speaking about Rogers’s future, O’Rourke said, “It’s not just Tottenham, I think there will be a lot of clubs looking at Morgan Rogers. He’s a top player and showed that for Villa last season, and he’s played well for England is going to be looking to push to be in the World Cup squad.

“Aston Villa did everything they could to make sure he didn’t have to be sold in the summer as part of the PSR and FFP issues they were struggling with. The price tag and everything else ensured there was no deal to be done in the summer, and nothing will happen in January.

“But it will be interesting to watch next summer, it could depend on where Villa are at with regard to PSR and what type of season they have. If those concerns are still there for Villa, then we could see them potentially forced to sell players and Rogers, of course, could be one of those because of the interest in him.”

Rogers could leave Villa next summer

While Morgan Rogers prefers playing as a number ten, he is capable enough to feature anywhere in attack. The 23-year-old had a very impressive season last time out. He was involved in a total of 54 matches and finished with 14 goals and 16 assists. The Englishman’s performances put him on the radar of Tottenham and Chelsea.

While Spurs made an enquiry about him this summer, it will be interesting to see if they return next summer, having added Xavi Simons to their squad. Meanwhile, Chelsea hold a strong interest in him, and they can certainly make a move if the opportunity arises, as Spurs beat them to the signature of Simons this summer.

Having sold the women’s team, Aston Villa have ensured the continuity of their stars for this season. But that could change next season, depending on the West Midlands club’s position with regard to PSR next summer.
