Crystal Palace rule out winter exit for Jean-Philippe Mateta

Newcastle United and Leeds United have suffered a massive blow in their pursuit of Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta.

According to a report from Football Insider, Newcastle United and Leeds United won’t be able to secure the services of Jean-Philippe Mateta this winter, as Crystal Palace have made it clear that they won’t sell the striker mid-season.

Mateta has been a part of the Palace setup since the start of 2021. While he initially joined them on loan, the move was made permanent in 2022. He was not really an integral part of their plans at the start, but the 28-year-old has managed to work his way into Oliver Glasner’s plans.

The Frenchman has been in sensational form over the last two seasons, scoring 30 Premier League goals. Given his recent form and the fact that he only has two years left on his deal at Selhurst Park, multiple English clubs were interested in him during the recently concluded transfer window.

Tottenham even made an enquiry about the 28-year-old, but it was turned down by the Eagles. Matate has had an impressive start to the new season; he already has three goals to his name. The interest in him continues to grow as his contract slowly runs down.

Crystal Palace won’t sell Mateta in January

Leeds United and Newcastle United are two clubs that are keen on securing Jean-Phlippe Mateta’s signature, and they are considering making a move in January. Daniel Farke’s team seek more firepower in the final third as they want to ensure they survive in the top flight. Mateta could certainly help their cause.

While Newcastle United did lose their star striker, Alexander Isak, they signed Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa quite late on in the transfer window. The duo can certainly help them cope with Isak’s absence. But Woltemade is relatively unknown and young; if he fails to get the desired results, the Magpies could look at a more experienced striker like Mateta.

Both Leeds United and Newcastle United would love to sign the French striker in January, but they are unlikely to get their hands on him. Crystal Palace have made it clear that they will not sanction his sale, as they won’t be able to secure an ideal replacement mid-season.
