Real Madrid eye Liverpool target as 2026 free transfer option

Liverpool experienced elation and frustration on the final day of the summer transfer window on September 1.

As the Premier League market mirrored La Liga and other major European leagues, Arne Slot finally secured his No.1 target, as Alexander Isak arrived at Anfield.

The Sweden international has spent the majority of the summer on strike after informing Newcastle United of his desire to join the Premier League champions.

Weeks of transfer talks culminated in a dramatic final 24 hours as the Reds wrapped up a record breaking £125m deal.

That came as the second time Slot has broken the EPL transfer record this summer after already bringing in Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

However, not everything went Slot’s way on the final day, as Crystal Palace blocked his move for captain Marc Guehi.

The England international agreed a move, after club chairman Steve Parish indicated his refusal to let him leave as a free agent next summer, before head coach Oliver Glasner stepped in.

Glasner allegedly threatened to walk out of Selhurst Park, unless a replacement for Guehi was secured before the window shut, after West Ham United beat them to the signing of Igor Julio.

Guehi is rumoured to be angered by the club’s refusal to let him go and he will resist all attempts made to agree a renewal in South London.

A move to Liverpool now looks to be delayed until 2026, but as per reports from the Daily Telegraph, Real Madrid are considering an offer in January.

Contract rules mean Los Blancos can make their move at the start of 2026 but Liverpool have to wait until the summer to formalise their bid.

Real Madrid are also tracking Ibrahima Konate – who is out of contract at Anfield in June 2026 – but the Spanish giants are willing to rival Liverpool on Guehi in their latest transfer face off following the Trent Alexander-Arnold debacle in June.
