Barcelona confirm new hamstring injury for key defender

Barcelona have not had a straightforward start to the new season, and their issues have continued with news that Alejandro Balde has sustained a hamstring injury in training.

On Wednesday afternoon, Barcelona confirmed via an official medical report that Balde had sustained a “slight” hamstring injury during the morning training session.

“Defender Alejandro Balde suffered a slight injury to his left hamstring during today’s training session. His availability will depend on how he progresses.”

It’s the second time in six months that Balde has injured his hamstring, having also done so in the victory at Leganes in April. These have both come after he tore the muscle back in January 2024 whilst playing against Athletic Club at San Mames.

How long will Balde be out for?

Barcelona have refused to give a timeline for Balde’s return, before according to Helena Condis, the left-back will be out for the next three weeks. That would mean that he misses La Liga matches against Valencia, Getafe and possibly Real Oviedo too, as well as the opening Champions League fixture of the season against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Balde’s absence coincides with Gerard Martin making his return to the first team, having been registered with La Liga just before last weekend’s draw at Rayo Vallecano. He is expected to be the starter during these aforementioned matches, although there could also be chances of teenager Jofre Torrents, who has impressed Hansi Flick during pre-season.

It is far from ideal for Barcelona to be without Balde, although there will be a feeling of relief that it is only three weeks that he is expected to miss. However, the fact that the 21-year-old continues to suffer hamstring injuries will be a big concern, and it may be something that the medical team looks at going forward.
