Victor Lindelof set to join Aston Villa as deal agreed
Former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof is reportedly on the verge of completing a Bosman move to Aston Villa.
According to an update by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Victor Lindelof will remain in England after leaving Manchester United as a free agent. The veteran Swedish defender has been searching for his next destination for several weeks. While many well-known clubs chased his signature, the Villans have secured an agreement with him over a Bosman move.
Victor Lindelof and his Premier League journey
Victor Lindelof experienced several peaks and troughs after joining Manchester United from SL Benfica in a deal worth £31 million in July 2017. The Swede enjoyed periods when he was an undisputed first-choice centre-back for the Red Devils, having forged formidable central defensive partnerships with Eric Bailly and Harry Maguire.
However, fitness issues plagued the 31-year-old in his last few seasons with Manchester United, and his stock gradually plummeted at Old Trafford. So, regular game time eluded Lindelof, and he barely featured for Manchester United in the 2024/25 campaign. The veteran defender made nearly 300 appearances for Manchester United while chipping in with four goals and seven assists.
However, Lindelof’s long association with Manchester United ended several weeks ago, as he has become a free agent. The Red Devils did not offer the Swedish international a new deal, and he has departed from Old Trafford. However, he had no shortage of suitors, as clubs from the Premier League and abroad pursued his signature. However, the experienced defender’s next destination will be Aston Villa.
Premier League adventure to continue for Lindelof
Aston Villa’s interest in Victor Lindelof is understandable. The Villans have been scouring the market for a centre-back throughout the summer transfer window after Axel Disasi returned to Chelsea after his loan spell in the second half of the 2024/25 season. Several candidates have thus emerged on the West Midlands club’s radar.
However, Aston Villa recently lost the battle for Jaydee Canvot, with the highly-rated Frenchman on the cusp of joining Crystal Palace. Lindelof has thus emerged as a viable alternative, considering his extensive Premier League experience. The two parties have struck an agreement, with the 31-year-old Swede on the cusp of completing a Bosman move to Villa Park.
The Villans have booked a medical for the former Manchester United defender, and he will sign a two-year contract, with the West Midlands club getting an optional year in the agreement. It will be interesting to see how the Swedish international fares at Aston Villa in the 2025/26 season.
