Barcelona poised to miss out on registering “bittersweet” star with La Liga
Despite getting Gerard Martin and Wojciech Szczesny signed up in the last 24 hours, Barcelona are still having registration struggles. Summer signing Roony Bardghji is still in limbo, and another player that is set to miss out on becoming a first team player is Marc Bernal.
Bernal broke on to the scene last summer, and during the early days of Hansi Flick’s tenure, he was a regular starter. However, he managed only three matches before suffering an ACL tear against Rayo Vallecano, which he has yet to make his return from.
It had already been decided that Bernal would not be available for Barcelona’s return to Vallecas on Sunday, with Flick keen to take strong precautions regarding the return of the 18-year-old sensation. But as per Sport, he is said to have a bittersweet feeling about his situation.

The “bitter” is for two reasons: his wait to make a long-awaited return, but also because Barcelona will not be able to register him with La Liga, which means that he will not be able to take a first team number.
Barcelona turned down loan approach for Bernal
Earlier in the summer, it was reported that Real Betis were interested in taking Bernal on loan for the 2025-26 season, and Sport have confirmed that an offer was made by the Andalusian club. However, it was swiftly rejected by Barcelona, who view the teenager as a very important player – which he appreciates, hence the “sweet”.
Bernal will still be able to play for Barcelona despite not being registered with La Liga, but it does mean that he is not classed as a first team player. But that could change, although a sale would be needed for him and Bardghji to be signed up before the summer transfer window closes on Monday.
