Cody Gakpo set for new Liverpool contract

Dutch international Cody Gakpo is set to commit his long-term future to Liverpool by signing a new contract.

Liverpool have made a surprise decision with regards to the future of Cody Gakpo. According to a report from ED, the Reds are willing to offer the Dutch international a new and improved contract to secure his long-term future.

Gakpo was a part of the PSV Eindhoven setup since his childhood days. He went up the ranks at some pace and got promoted to the first team back in 2018. After making a name for himself while playing for them, he made the move to Anfield at the start of 2023.

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was keen on having him in his ranks, and the Merseyside club ended up spending €50 million (including bonuses) to sign the 26-year-old. Gakpo has been a consistent performer for the Reds over the years.

He had a prominent role in the team last season under Arne Slot. He was involved in a total of 49 matches and contributed towards 25 goals. Despite not being a guaranteed starter, he certainly played a big part in their Premier League triumph.

On the back of his impressive performances, multiple top clubs have tried to sign him this summer. But Gakpo doesn’t seem keen on leaving, and Slot is also pushing to have him in their squad.

A new deal for Gakpo is on the cards

The 26-year-old has made an exceptional start to the new season, having contributed towards three goals in his first three outings. His performances seem to have impressed the people at Anfield, and they have ramped up their efforts to secure his long-term future.

Although his current deal runs until the summer of 2028, Gakpo is on relatively modest wages, and Liverpool are keen to reward him for his performances. With Arne Slot set to hand him an important role moving forward, the club want to secure his long-term commitment amid interest from across Europe.

According to the report, Gakpo is close to signing the new contract. The Dutchman is ready to commit his future to Liverpool and embrace the new project under Slot. Despite the influx of summer signings, he remains confident of playing a key role for the Reds.
