Real Madrid abandon plan to sign Ibrahima Konate

Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid have decided against making a move for Liverpool defensive mainstay Ibrahima Konate.

According to a report from Fichajes, Real Madrid will not push to sign Ibrahima Konate this summer despite Xabi Alonso being keen on adding him to his squad. The Spanish coach wants to add a more experienced campaigner to his backline and would love to have Konate at his disposal. But Florentino Perez has ruled out the signing of the Liverpool mainstay.

Konate made a name for himself at RB Leipzig before making the move to the Merseyside club in the summer of 2021. He has gone from strength to strength over the years and has established himself as a key figure in the team.

The 22-cap French international has been ever-present in Arne Slot’s backline this season as they went on to win the Premier League. He featured in 42 matches across all competitions and even contributed four goals.

While he is a very important part of Slot’s plans, his future has been a massive talking point of late. The 26-year-old central defender’s contract runs out next summer and multiple reports have linked him with a move away.

Real Madrid have emerged as a potential destination. The Spanish giants have already added Dean Huijsen to their squad but Xabi Alonso seeks more quality and depth at the back as David Alaba and Eder Militao have had massive injury concerns in the recent past.

Los Blancos won’t sign Konate

Alonso is keen on having the French international in his squad as he has a more established profile and could be an important part of his plans from the start. But his desire to have the 26-year-old is unlikely to be fulfilled.

Liverpool are already working on a potential renewal and are unlikely to let him leave on the cheap. The Reds want around €70 million for the French defender. Real Madrid have no intentions of paying that big a fee for someone, who could potentially be available for free next summer.

Los Blancos want to stick to their policy of not overpaying for someone who is entering the final year of his contract. They trust Huijsen to play an important part next season and have a lot of trust in Raul Asencio, who has had a breakthrough season under Carlo Ancelotti.

As a result, Alonso might have to work with the options he already has or look at a more cost-effective option for this summer.
