Cristian Romero confirms La Liga desire amid Atletico Madrid links
Tottenham Hotspur defensive mainstay Cristian Romero has admitted that he wants to play in La Liga amidst interest from Atletico Madrid.
Cristian Romero’s future has been a big talking point in recent months. While he is a very important part of the Tottenham Hotspur squad and still has two years left on his deal, he has been linked with a move away from the club.
Romero has been heavily linked with a move to Spain with Atletico Madrid emerging as the front-runner. Deigo Simeone seeks more quality and depth at the back and he is believed to be a massive admirer of the Argentine international.
Romero wants to play in La Liga
Their pursuit appears to have received a major boost, as Romero recently admitted he would like to play in Spain. In an interview with journalist Gaston Edul, when asked about his future and preferred destination, he revealed that La Liga is the league he would like to experience.
He said: “I would love to play in La Liga, it’s the one I’m missing,”
Romero joined the North London club in the summer of 2021. While it was an initial loan deal, the move was made permanent in the following summer. Over the years he has only gone from strength to strength and has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world.
While he has struggled to stay fit this season, he remains a key figure in the Tottenham setup. Ange Postecoglou has already publicly admitted that the 27-year-old should continue at the club at cost, which certainly highlights his importance.
Atletico making moves to sign Romero
He still has two years left on his deal but his continuity can’t be guaranteed as Atletico are pushing hard to secure his services. Simeone feels he is an ideal fit to bolster his defence and he wants to add him to the Argentine contingent at the club.
While Atletico are aware that negotiations with Daniel Levy won’t be easy, they are still willing to try their luck. The Spanish giants have been working on a potential deal and are expected to soon enter into a week-long negotiations to try and strike a deal.
Reports have suggested that the Tottenham defender is keen on joining them and now he has admitted he wants to play in the Spanish top flight. While he appears open to a move, his response when asked about his immediate future offered a glimmer of hope for Spurs fans.
Romero said: “I’m going to give my best until the last day I’m here,”
“I’m happy. They make me feel like an important player. Whatever the future holds for me, I’m welcome.”
With two years left on his deal and a renewal nowhere in the picture, Spurs could consider cashing in on him. But they want around €70 million and Atletico have no intentions of getting anywhere close to that figure.
