Rewarding patience: Icelandic international enjoying a strong start to the season with FC Groningen
FC Groningen are having a strong start to the Eredivisie season. After finishing ninth last season, the side are looking to go even better this season. After a 5-1 win over Excelsior at the weekend, Groningen are currently sitting in sixth. Their success has been built on the back of a strong attack which has scored 20 goals in just eight games this season. Part of that success has been down to the performances of 26-year-old Icelandic international Brynjólfur Willumsson.
Willumsson grabbed his fifth goal of the season for Groningen at the weekend in that victory, putting him just one goal away from his total from last season. The forward joined Groningen from Norwegian side Kristiansund back in 2024 and has taken a few seasons to get used to Dutch football. After scoring four goals in 30 games during his debut campaign, Willumsson scored six in 29 last season. Groningen have been patient with Willumsson, and this is being rewarded so far this season. It has taken him just eight games to score five goals, with double figures surely on the cards. Willumsson’s best goal scoring season of his career came in 2023 when he scored seven goals in 23 games for Kristiansund.
After eight games, Groningen are only five points away from PSV in second place. They will be hoping to remain consistent again this season and qualify for the European play offs. The side have not played European football since the 2015/2016 season when they competed in the Europa League group stages.
