Ex-Real Madrid man David Alaba reveals reason behind Udinese transfer

Serie A side Udinese pulled off a coup when they signed former Real Madrid man David Alaba on a free transfer about a week ago. This came right after Oumar Solet was excluded from action due to injury and the decision to sign the Austrian did catch the eye for many.

The defender was presented to the media as a Udinese player today and he was asked a host of questions about the decision.

The former Real Madrid man revealed that Kosta Runjaic is key behind the deal.

He said – via Corriere dello Sport: “I’m here because I spoke to the coach, who told me about the project that is here. I took my time to make this decision and I convinced myself that this was the right path for me, the right step for my career, also because I’ve always wanted to play in Serie A.”

Alaba also revealed he sees himself as a central defender now and that is his best position.

“I see myself better as a central defender, even if I can adapt to full-back or midfield but regardless of the role the coach gives me, I’m here to give my help to the team.”

The defender also revealed that he received positive advice from Luka Modric, who was teammates with him at Real Madrid.

“I spoke to Modric in the last few weeks and also to Ribery and Arnautovic, who know Serie A and introduced me to this championship.”

The Austria international is expected to be key for the Friulian side, as he will add a lot of experience to the backline, with Thomas Kristensen having lost. There are long-term doubts about Solet too, as he has been linked with moves away from the side.
