Liverpool learn new asking price for Marc Guehi
Crystal Palace are likely to reduce their asking price for Marc Guehi in January, with the updated figures pointing towards a £10 million discount from the summer rate.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool are likely to pay a lesser price for Marc Guehi when the January window opens. The Merseysiders failed with a late move for the centre-back amid dramatic circumstances, with the Crystal Palace star now available at a new price ahead of the winter window.
Liverpool faced disappointment at the end of deadline day as they had hoped to cap off their window with two stellar signings on the same day. First, they finally agreed a deal with Newcastle United for Alexander Isak in a British record deal, then they wanted to bring Marc Guehi to solve their defensive problems.
Guehi gave his green light to the move, and Liverpool wasted no time on deadline day to agree a fee with Palace. However, the move collapsed in the eleventh hour as the Eagles could not secure a viable replacement, as talks for Igor Julio also collapsed in the background. Oliver Glasner played a crucial role in keeping the defender, despite Guehi being disappointed at the failed move.
The Eagles were left with no choice but to take a risky step and keep hold of Guehi despite the 25-year-old entering the final year of his deal. They are now at risk of losing the skipper on a free transfer next summer, but there’s a slight chance they could still cash in during the January window, with Liverpool already ready to make their move in the winter window.
The report states, Palace would discount the original £35 million asking price and reduce it by £10 million. Hence, Liverpool may have to fork out around £25 million for the 25-year-old summer target and bring him on board their project.
Liverpool face fresh Marc Guehi challenges
Guehi was seen as the missing piece by Liverpool to solve their shortages in defence. While they are still considered the front-runners for the Palace star, there are fresh challenges ahead. First, they will have to convince Palace to sell him in January, and then ward off competition with Bayern Munich, already interested in the 25-year-old.
Real Madrid have also maintained an interest, and the prospect of signing a player like Guehi on a free transfer next summer will be tempting for Florentino Perez. Hence, the pursuit of the 25-year-old will not be straightforward for Liverpool, although they are still the front runners given the player was very close to joining the Reds on deadline day.
