Manchester City rival Newcastle United in James Trafford chase

Manchester City are in the mix for James Trafford and could exercise their buy-back clause on the keeper, as Newcastle United are waiting on the outcome.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have joined the race for James Trafford this summer as they potentially anticipate a departure from their goalkeeping ranks. Pep Guardiola’s side have a buy-back clause in the 22-year-old Burnley contract, which has so far not allowed Newcastle United to make the move.

James Trafford has emerged as a big name in the goalkeeper market this summer, with a host of teams looking to bring the stopper. Since impressing again in the Championship with Burnley, the keeper might be on the move away from Scott Parker’s side, as some big teams are waiting on his decision.

Manchester City have a buy-back clause in his contract, which was inserted when they sold him to Burnley. It appears Pep Guardiola is now keen to bring the keeper back to the club, as Manchester City were ready to offload one of Stefan Ortega or Ederson Moraes this summer.

Both those key stars are considering exits, as Ederson was open to leaving even last season. Galatasaray are keen on the Brazilian, as a move to Saudi Arabia might not be an option this summer. As for Ortega, he does not want to be second fiddle at this stage of his career, and while he has had plenty of game time under Guardiola during his spell here, he’s never managed to cement the No.1 spot.

Manchester City have contacted relevant parties to understand a possible deal, although for them, it would be a straightforward buy-back of sorts. As Guardiola’s side are chasing the 22-year-old from a newly promoted PL club, it has so far stalled Newcastle United’s prospects of signing him, although they are firmly in the race.

James Trafford on the move

Trafford could consider his future based on the role offered at his next club. There’s even a distinct possibility of staying put at Burnley, where he can enjoy another season as the undisputed No.1, although the Clarets offer no guarantees of staying in the Premier League at the end of the campaign.

Newcastle United are still pushing for Trafford, although they might have to wait until Manchester City makes their decision on the 22-year-old from the newly promoted PL club. The Magpies are seemingly ready to pay what may be necessary to land the stopper, although the two big clubs interested so far are likely to offer a competitive role rather than guarantees of having Trafford as their new No.1.
