Tottenham likely to sanction Cristian Romero exit
Tottenham are expected to sanction a departure for Cristian Romero amid heavy interest from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.
According to Football Insider, Tottenham are not expected to force the issue on Cristian Romero and could accept his departure sometime during the summer window. Atletico Madrid remain heavily linked with the 27-year-old World Cup winner, as Diego Simeone is taking a personal interest in signing the defender.
Cristian Romero did suffer an injury-ravaged 2024-25 season at Tottenham, but he was available for the club’s most important game of the campaign, that is, the Europa League Final. Winning the ultimate clash against Manchester United allowed Spurs to earn a place in next season’s Champions League, but that may not prove enough to keep the Argentine.
Romero had set his sights on a departure, even though Daniel Levy was trying to extend his deal at the club. As things stand, Tottenham are demanding at least £60 million to sell the defender, with Atletico Madrid heavily interested in the 27-year-old World Cup winner.
Diego Simeone is personally attentive to the situation and wants the defender at the club at all costs this summer. The idea of uniting with his compatriot might appeal to Romero, as Spurs are likely to concede defeat and let the defender leave.
Tottenham did plan on keeping Romero for one more season, but with the defender entering the final two years of his deal at the club, the ideal time to sell might be now. They have already secured the permanent signing of Kevin Danso, while a replacement for Romero will be needed once the 27-year-old World Cup winner leaves.
Tottenham to accept Cristian Romero offer
Atletico Madrid, despite a big interest in Romero, have not presented with an offer for Tottenham to consider. A recent report stated they are inching closer on a move for a £55 million fee, but as per the report, Spurs are demanding £60 million, with Levy widely known for his strong negotiating skills.
Spurs will know the player desires an exit, and Atletico Madrid might be the only real contender for the World Cup winner. Hence, negotiations are expected to take place, with Spurs likely to accept an offer, possibly even for a sum lower than the £60 million asking price.
