AZ Alkmaar closing in on new contract with star midfielder

VI are reporting that AZ Alkmaar are closing in on signing a contract extension with their star youngster Kees Smit. The midfielder will extend his current contract, which runs out in 2028, until 2030. This is a huge boost for AZ Alkmaar as Smit is certainly going to be attracting interest from a number of clubs after his performances this season and last. Now, AZ Alkmaar can guarantee that they will receive a sizeable sum if they do decide to sell Smit in the future.

The 20-year-old Smit played 46 games for AZ Alkmaar last season, scoring five goals and providing nine assist. This earned him a call up to the Dutch national team, although he did not make the final World Cup squad. However, many consider Smit to be a future Dutch international at some point given his obvious talent levels and potential to get even better. So far this season, Smit has played seven games for AZ Alkmaar, providing two assists.

AZ Alkmaar have had a fantastic start to the Eredivisie season, winning six of their seven games and drawing one. They face second place Feyenoord on Saturday evening as the international break comes to an end. The top five are separated by just five points, highlighting that this year may be one of the best title races in recent Eredivisie history.
