Could Ajax make it a five horse title race in the Eredivisie?
Over the past three seasons, PSV have been the dominant force in the Eredivisie. The side from Eindhoven has won three titles on the bounce and are aiming to make it four at the end of the current campaign. However, coming out of the international break, the table suggests that we could witness a pretty exciting title race this season. Ajax in fifth are on 14 points, just five points behind AZ in first. Ajax could, if they build on their three game unbeaten streak going into the international break, make it a five horse title race in the Eredivisie.
AZ and Feyenoord are the current top two and the only unbeaten sides in the league. AZ have won six of their seven games, with just six goals conceded and 18 scored. Feyenoord, who are two points behind AZ, have won five and drawn two. their attack is the best in the league with 25 goals in seven games, a tribute to the work done by Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the clubs new Sporting Director Dévy Rigaux.
Just a point behind Feyenoord are both PSV and FC Twente. The two sides have identical records with five wins, one draw and one defeat. PSV are just ahead having scored 24 goals with 10 conceded. Twente have been strong at the back with just seven goals conceded, but up top they aren’t as potent, with just 15 scored.
Behind these two sides are Ajax. The closest the club from Amsterdam has come to winning the Eredivisie for a 37th time was during the 2024/2025 season when they finished second. So far, it has been four year drought. If they want to stop that reaching five years, they really do need to improve coming out of the international break. Ajax brought in Michel over the summer and he is slowly starting to turn things around. They have only lost one of their previous five games, with plenty of goals scored in that time. However, Ajax only defeat in that time was to PSV, which may be an indicator of how far away they actually are. Ajax also went into the international break off the back of a 2-2 home draw with surprise package Excelsior.
Yet Ajax do have some players that could propel them into a title race. Julian Brandt has hit the ground running with four goals, while Tolu Arokodare is doing well with three. Oscar Gloukh has been outstanding this season with five goals and four assists in just 12 games. The talent appears to be there for Ajax to compete for the title this season, it just might come down to whether or not Michel can get them playing at the right levels consistently.
Ajax will face NEC Nijmegen on Saturday evening in their first game back after the break.
