Date for Ligue 1 broadcasting rights auction revealed

A call for offers for the broadcasting rights for Ligue 1 will be launched next month, as per a report from L’Équipe. Unlike in more recent bidding processes, there is more optimism this time around, the publication adds.

Broadcasting rights have been on the decline ever since the collapse of the disastrous MediaPro deal in 2020. Amazon came in at that point, but upon the conclusion of their contract, which soured relations with traditional broadcaster Canal Plus, it was DAZN that acquired the rights. However, the broadcaster was ultimately unhappy with the terms negotiated, as well as a perceived lack of effort in curbing piracy, which was hurting viewing figures.

As a result, one year into their five-year deal, DAZN pulled out. Ligue 1 Plus was formed, with beIN Sports, at the time, taking one of the nine Ligue 1 matches in the gameweek. Receipts for clubs decreased again and even more so since the withdrawal of beIN Sports this season.

Recent law change works in LFP Media’s favour

LFP Media have sought to act quickly in order to secure a new TV rights deal. There is a get-out clause for the current deal with Ligue 1 Plus that expires in March. The league-owned broadcaster, which came into existence in the summer of 2025, has a contract that runs through until 2029.

However, since this summer, the Director General of LFP Media, Olivier Bramly, has been meeting with broadcasters such as Canal Plus, RMC Sport, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, etc. He has been enthused by these talks and revealed these talks during an administration council meeting on Tuesday, L’Équipe understands. A call for bids will be launched in November.

Much of the reason for optimism regards a recent change in French low that allows the TV rights to be sold as one bundle, rather than being cut up and sold to various broadcasters or distributors.
