Giorgio Scalvini comments on future amid Chelsea, Newcastle United links
Giorgio Scalvini has suggested that he would be open to moving abroad instead of spending his entire career in Serie A.
As quoted by Football Italia, Giorgio Scalvini has given hope to Chelsea and Newcastle United, plus other prospective suitors outside Italy. The 22-year-old Atalanta centre-back is eager to “learn new things and concepts” by moving abroad instead of remaining in Italy for the remainder of his career.
Scalvini said in a press conference representing Italy, “I’ve always been there, and I’ve extended because I’ve always felt good. At the same time, I understand those who change clubs and go abroad. One day I’d like to do that to learn new things and new concepts, but I’m already doing it at Atalanta.”
Giorgio Scalvini and his rollercoaster career so far
Giorgio Scalvini has experienced mixed fortunes since breaking into the first-team squad at Atalanta. While the 22-year-old has been one of the most promising centre-backs in Serie A over the past half a decade, an untimely knee injury blighted his 2024/25 campaign. So, the youngster was in and out of the starting lineup last season due to load management after returning from injury.
The Italian international managed only 2,221 minutes of game time across 30 appearances in all competitions in the 2025/26 season, chipping in with three goals and one assist. However, Scalvini has been a regular this term, already accumulating over 500 minutes in seven outings. The youngster’s stock has soared after his recent progress, with Chelsea and Newcastle United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.
Premier League adventure on the horizon?
Giorgio Scalvini has been on Newcastle United’s wishlist for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, as the Magpies are scouring the market for a centre-back due to the advancing years of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn. Additionally, Sven Botman has struggled with fitness issues in recent seasons. So, Scalvini is a viable target for Newcastle United as they look for a long-term central defensive core.
As for Chelsea, while Honest Ahanor will arrive at Stamford Bridge next year, Xabi Alonso’s back-three system requires additional depth. So, Scalvini can join Levi Colwill, Maxence Lacroix, and Josh Acheampong in the Chelsea defence, setting the West London club up for long-term success.
However, while Scalvini has suggested that he wants to move abroad in the future, he remains committed to Atalanta. So, a move to the Premier League is not imminent amid his links with Chelsea and Newcastle United.
