Didier Deschamps to miss France’s final World Cup group stage game following death of his mother
Didier Deschamps will miss France’s final 2026 FIFA World Cup Group Stage game following the death of his mother, the FFF have confirmed.
Les Bleus guaranteed their progression in the World Cup thanks to a 3-0 win over Iraq on Monday. The 2022 finalists also beat Senegal in their first game, meaning that they currently sit top of Group I on six points. They are joined on six points by Norway who have a marginally worse goal difference (+4 compared to +5 for Les Bleus).
Stéphan in charge in Deschamps’ absence
France will face Norway on Friday night but Deschamps will not be on the touchline in Boston. On Tuesday evening, the FFF released a statement revealing the passing of the France manager’s mother. He learnt the news on Tuesday morning. He is now set to return to France for the funeral.
Deschamps has been permitted to make the trip back across the Atlantic by FFF president Philippe Diallo. Assistant Guy Stéphan will take charge of Les Bleus, as they look to finish top of their group.
