Strasbourg head coach Gary O’Neil closing in on Ipswich Town move

RC Strasbourg Alsace head coach Gary O’Neil is expected to make his return to the Premier League in succeeding Kieran McKenna at promoted outfit Ipswich Town FC. The Athletic understands that a deal to bring O’Neil to Portman Road has reached its closing stages. The 43-year-old’s move from Strasbourg to Ipswich Town could even be made official as early as next week following rounds of positive talks between Strasbourg owners BlueCo and ITFC.

O’Neil could therefore leave Strasbourg less than six months after his arrival. The Brit replaced Chelsea-bound Liam Rosenior in the La Meinau dugout. O’Neil led the Ligue 1 outfit to the UEFA Conference League and Coupe de France semi-finals, but Strasbourg’s form in Ligue 1 took a serious hit. The Alsatians won’t even be in Europe next season.

When the Ligue 1 campaign ended, Strasbourg president Marc Keller confirmed that O’Neil would remain in his post, but the situation at the BlueCo-owned Ligue 1 club has now taken a dramatic turn.
