Newcastle United closely monitoring Jan Paul van Hecke situation
Newcastle United may look to sign 25-year-old Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Football Insider, Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The 2024/25 EFL Cup winners are “keeping a close eye on” the Dutchman’s contract situation, as he will enter the final year of his deal in July. While Brighton & Hove Albion want to tie van Hecke to fresh terms, they will cash in on him if they fail to make progress “towards an extension” in the coming months.
Jan Paul van Hecke has established himself as one of the most dependable and productive centre-backs in the Premier League since joining Brighton & Hove Albion from NAC Breda in September 2020. While the 25-year-old had to bide his time before becoming a regular for the Seagulls, he has not looked back since becoming Lewis Dunk’s first-choice central defensive partner.
The Dutch defender has been impressive thus far in the 2025/26 season, chipping in with three goals and three assists in 32 Premier League games. Additionally, van Hecke’s exploits have helped him break into his national side, and he has made 10 appearances for the Netherlands. Meanwhile, his progress has piqued the attention of several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United.
Jan Paul van Hecke has been on Newcastle United’s wishlist for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, as the Magpies are carving out a succession plan for Fabian Schar and Dan Burn. While the experienced centre-backs have been excellent for the Tyneside outfit, they are in the twilight of their careers.
Additionally, Sven Botman has endured a few fitness issues in recent seasons. Several candidates, including Ousmane Diomande, have thus emerged on Newcastle United’s wishlist, with van Hecke also a viable target.
