Cesc Fabregas questions Gasperini’s sportsmanship as Roma boss refuses to shake hands after Como defeat

Como beat Roma 2-1 on Sunday with several flashpoints, including Wesley’s dismissal amidst the hosts’ comeback, ending the game in fractious circumstances.

The Lariani’s head coach, Cesc Fabregas, commented on Gian Piero Gasperini’s decision not to acknowledge him after the final whistle as the experienced manager’s frustrations seemingly got the better of him.

“I found it unsporting. Whether I’m angry, or sent off, or even when I think the referee has wronged me, at the end of the match I go and shake hands with the opponent. It’s a question of respect and sportsmanship, and I was disappointed by what happened.

“I repeat, even when you lose the match, you go and shake hands with the opponent. When I see a colleague of mine leave without saying goodbye, I feel sad, but that’s how it went.”

The 38-year-old Catalan manager recalled the situation in more depth, continuing: “I went to say goodbye to him like I always do, and I watched him leave. I come from another country, and I have to get used to these things. When we play, everything is fine, and we fight, but then when the match is over, for me it’s all over, and we always shake hands.

“Recently, I’ve also done things I’m not proud of, but I think we have to set an example. Let’s always remember that the boys are watching us. The club is already in a bad moment, and we have the duty to set the right example.”
