Liverpool, Manchester United line up summer move for Adam Wharton
Liverpool and Manchester United are both ready to square up against each other in their pursuit of Crystal Palace midfield sensation Adam Wharton.
Adam Wharton could end up joining a bigger club in England this summer, amidst interest from Manchester United and Liverpool. According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, both Premier League giants are preparing a summer move for the English international.
Wharton had a sensational rise at Blackburn Rovers, and on the back of it, the Eagles secured his services at the start of 2024, and he has not looked back since. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder has been doing wonders for Crystal Palace over the last 18 months.
The Englishman is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in England, and thanks to his consistent performances, there is no shortage of interest in him. Wharton has seven goal contributions in his 39 outings across competitions. Given the kind of form he has been in, the youngster looks set to feature in the World Cup.
While his contract at Selhurst Park runs until the summer of 2029, Adam Wharton could push for a move away this summer with the Eagles struggling and Oliver Glasner leaving the club at the end of the season.
Pete O’Rourke on interest in Wharton’s signature
While speaking about Wharton’s future, O’Rourke said, “There’s no doubt he’s going be on the radar of a number of clubs. He has been on the radar of several top Premier League clubs for a while now, with United amongst them.
“You’ve got the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and others abroad who are very much interested in Wharton.
“We know he is going to be the subject of transfer speculation this summer because of how well he is playing for Crystal Palace. He is a key man for them.
“Wharton, at some point, will want to be playing at the highest level possible. I think he’s admitted before that he sees himself playing Champions League football and wants to become a regular in the England squad as well.
“He’s obviously one of the players who is on United’s list as they look to restructure their midfield next season as well. There are a number of players that they are looking at, and Wharton is on that list.”
Manchester United and Liverpool to battle for Adam Wharton
The Eagles will certainly demand a massive fee, but that is unlikely to stop interested clubs. Manchester United and Liverpool are two of the biggest suitors for his signature. Both clubs are lining up a summer move for him.
The Red Devils consider him an ideal replacement for Casemiro, who is leaving at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Arne Slot wants to strengthen his midfield rotation, and the Reds believe he can compete with Ryan Gravenberch for a place in the starting XI.
Apart from the two Premier League giants, there are other top clubs that are after his signature. As a result, it will be interesting to see where Wharton plays his football next season.
