Liverpool have agreement in place with Xabi Alonso
Liverpool reportedly have an agreement in place with Xabi Alonso to become their next manager and replace Arne Slot.
According to Fichajes, Xabi Alonso could be the next Liverpool manager, with a rumoured agreement in place for the Spaniard to take over from Arne Slot. The latter has underperformed in the current season, with the Merseysiders fighting for a top-four place rather than the title, which has seen speculation surrounding his own future.
Liverpool have had a disastrous season on most fronts, as they went from defending champions to now challenging for a top-four place. Ahead of the final stretch of the season, Arne Slot needs to have a perfect run-in and secure Champions League football.
Without Champions League football, Slot could lose his job, as per multiple reports surrounding his future at Liverpool. There have been calls from sections of the fanbase to sack the Dutchman for months, owing to some timid performances from the defending champions.
Liverpool are still in three competitions theoretically, but there is a lack of confidence that they will go the distance in either of those. As for Slot’s future, there are big question marks surrounding his time at the club, as rumours suggest the club might make a decision and bring in a replacement.
Liverpool have considered Xabi Alonso as an option, with the report now stating that the 44-year-old Real Madrid legend has already been offered a three-year deal to take over from Slot. It remains to be seen whether this is true, but the former midfielder is certainly one to watch in the summer, not only with regards to the hot seat in Merseyside but elsewhere too.
Is Xabi Alonso Liverpool-bound?
Liverpool are among a host of clubs looking at Alonso as a potential managerial option, with his other suitors including Manchester City and Manchester United, for example. However, his strong ties to Liverpool make him a favourite to take over from Slot, although the rumours of an agreement seem to be a stretch.
So far, Liverpool have given no indication of sacking Slot either now or in the summer, but the previously held contract talks have certainly stalled. The club might consider a change depending on whether the Dutchman can improve the team’s performances between now and the end of the season, although Alonso’s availability could keep them on alert over the managerial situation.
